A bathing beach located 400 metres north of point 69 in Numana, Ancona Province, Marche region. The beach features fine calcareous gravel with a 3% slope on the emerged beach and 8% slope on the submerged beach. The distance between mean low and high water (safe water limit) is 4 metres, with astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area is composed of urban settlements and tourist facilities.

Coastal bathing water body (Numana_Porto Recanati). Beach dimensions: 250 metres long, 50 metres wide. Area: 0.18128 hectares. Water body influenced by the Musone River and its tributaries.

Water Quality

Classification history: 2015 Poor (E. coli 90th percentile 633.4, Intestinal Enterococci 464.9); 2016 Poor (E. coli 486.5, Intestinal Enterococci 330.1); 2017 Sufficient (E. coli 803.6, Intestinal Enterococci 328.1); 2018 Sufficient (E. coli 291.7, Intestinal Enterococci 76.6). Two biological wastewater treatment plants serve the area: one at Camerano treating approximately 20,500 urban equivalent inhabitants with 7,032 cubic metres daily capacity, and one at Castelfidardo treating approximately 22,150 urban equivalent inhabitants with 62,000 equivalent inhabitant capacity. Combined summer populations may reach approximately 25,374 equivalent inhabitants. Monthly ARPAM monitoring of the Castelfidardo treatment plant during 2010 showed results compliant with authorized limits.

Risks

Mixed-type sewer collectors may overflow during intense rainfall events, causing wastewater discharge to alternative outfalls along the Aspio torrent and its tributaries (Camerano system) or along the beach at Numana or the Musone River and its tributaries (Osimo and Castelfidardo systems). Some rural and isolated buildings remain disconnected from public sewerage.
