Open Water is a designated swimming area located along the northern end of Aarhus Ø. The swimming lane is marked with buoys and measures approximately 500 meters long and 30 meters wide. Access is provided via a bathing bridge at the end of Bernhard Jensens Boulevard. The water depth varies significantly: 6–9 meters beyond the stone jetty, and 0.1–0.75 meters over the jetty depending on tidal conditions.

Water

Open water swimming lane marked with buoys. Approximately 500 meters long and 30 meters wide. Depth ranges from 0.1–0.75 meters over the stone jetty (depending on tidal conditions) to 6–9 meters beyond the jetty. Weak current, mainly from the southeast.

Location

Aarhus Ø, northern end. Access via bathing bridge at the end of Bernhard Jensens Boulevard. Parking available at the car park at the end of Bernhard Jensens Boulevard or in Z-huset, Esther Aggerbos Gade. A broad beach promenade with benches and recreational areas adjacent to Jette Tikjøbs Plads.

Water Quality

Classification is based on data from the last four years. Sampling for Open Water as a bathing station began in 2024 and no classification has yet been established. Elevated bacterial levels may occur during rainfall due to stormwater outlets and combined sewer overflows.

Risks

Waves of 50–75 cm above natural wave height may occur due to high-speed ferry operations. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms can occur under specific current directions and after several days of calm, warm weather. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) at the shoreline may accumulate toxins during decomposition and harbor disease-causing bacteria. Swimming is not recommended near accumulated seaweed.
