Bellevue Strand is an urban beach surrounded by a residential villa area. The beach has a width of approximately 25 metres with a sand bottom. The 2-metre depth contour is located about 100 metres from the shore. Predominantly northward currents flow through the area. Fast ferries operating nearby can generate waves 50–75 cm higher than natural wave height.

Location

Bellevue Strand is accessed from Fortevej, which provides good parking facilities. The beach is located in Aarhus Municipality.

Facilities

Kiosk, toilet, drinking water, lifeboat station, disabled access, information board. Dogs are not permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on data from the last 4 years. Several stormwater outlets are present on the beach and along the stretch south of it. Heavy rainfall creates a risk of elevated bacterial counts from runoff of surfaces such as roofs and roads, resulting in background contamination.

Risks

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms can occur during particular current directions and after several days of calm, warm weather. Macroalgae (seaweed) and/or phytoplankton blooms can occur; large quantities of seaweed at the shore edge pose a risk as toxins can form in decaying seaweed and it can protect pathogenic bacteria from UV degradation. Stormwater outlets present a source of pollution.
