Cyprus Coastal 1 - Excellent

Aorátoi is a sandy beach located in the Limassol District, near the village of Pyrgo in Cyprus. The beach is 700 metres long and borders the Panagiés beach to the east, with the Saint Raphael Marina located approximately 150 metres to the west. Hotel facilities line the coastal zone, with landscaping vegetation including palms and eucalyptus trees. The beach features natural beach rocks on the western section and artificial wave breakers on the eastern section, with two sandy headlands equipped with beach umbrellas behind the breakers.

Water

Coastal bathing water body named Moni. Average water depth 1.5 metres, maximum depth 2.5 metres. Beach length 700 metres. Seabed composed of sandy granular material with scattered pebbles. Semi-natural littoral zone with natural beach rocks on the western portion and artificial parallel wave breakers on the eastern portion.

Location

Located in Limassol District, Pyrgo Community, Cyprus. Coordinates: 33.1711° E, 34.7113° N (ETRS89). Adjacent to Panagiés beach and approximately 150 metres east of Saint Raphael Marina.

Facilities

Lifeguards and rescue equipment available from 10:00 to 17:00 during summer season. Toilets available through hotel facilities. Waste collection bins located along the entire beach. Beach chairs and umbrellas available during summer season. Blue Flag status awarded to the beach. No public facilities available; bathers use hotel installations for toilets.

Season

Monitoring conducted during the swimming season. Short-term pollution risk frequency estimated at one occurrence per swimming season with duration of 1–2 days.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The coastal water body is in good ecological condition. One isolated pollution incident recorded during the 2007 swimming season. Monitoring under EU Directive 76/160/EEC began in 2004 following Cyprus's accession to the European Union.

Risks

Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton eutrophication development. Possible pollution sources include low-intensity agricultural runoff and infiltration, stormwater discharge from a drainage pipe on the western portion of the beach, and vessel traffic from and to Saint Raphael Marina. One short-term pollution event recorded between 2008 and 2010 (5 May 2009) attributed to storm conditions. Small risk of short-term pollution from stormwater runoff and passing vessels.
