Åkrogen

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Åkrogen is a bathing beach located in an urban area near Aarhus. The beach has a width of 5-10 metres and features predominantly sandy bottom conditions with occasional macroalgae growth and wash-up on the shore. The beach is popular with wind and kite surfers due to favourable wind conditions and shallow water. Water quality is classified as excellent based on data from the last 4 years.

Water

Sandy bottom beach. Beach width 5-10 metres. The 2-metre depth contour is approximately 250 metres from the shore. Predominantly weak northbound current. Ferry operations can generate waves of 50-75 cm above natural wave height.

Location

Aarhus Municipality. Access is at the end of Åkrog Strandvej where good parking facilities are available.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Egå River discharges north of the beach, bringing treated wastewater from Egå treatment plant, overflow water from combined sewer areas, stormwater from separate sewer areas, and wastewater from primitive septic systems in rural areas. A permanent bathing ban is in effect from the Egå outlet and 150 metres south.

Risks

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms can occur during particular current directions and after several days of calm, warm weather. Macroalgae (seaweed) blooms can produce toxins in decaying seaweed and harbour disease-causing bacteria protected from UV degradation. Large quantities of seaweed at the shoreline warrant caution. Bathing is prohibited from the Egå outlet and 150 metres south.
