Årby Badebro

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Årby Badebro is a stone beach approximately 110 metres long and 20 metres wide located in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. The beach features a stone bottom at the water's edge with scattered patches of sand. A rescue ring is present on the beach, and there are remnants of a bathing pier that is no longer in use. A boat mooring area is located on the western side of the beach.

Water

Coastal bathing water with stone bottom at the water's edge. The beach is approximately 110 metres long and 20 metres wide. Water flow direction primarily easterly in 2010, with more westerly direction observed in 2008–2009.

Location

Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. Access via a single road leading to a large grassed area where parking is available. The beach is situated with cultivated fields in the hinterland and scattered buildings nearby.

Facilities

Rescue ring. Parking area available at the beach access point.

Season

Water quality monitoring conducted minimum four times per year. Classification section reviewed annually in November following the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2018–2021 place the beach in the Excellent category under EU bathing water directive rules. Kalundborg treatment plant is the identified source of fecal pollution. Short-term pollution typically results from heavy rainfall causing treatment plant overflow, lasting a maximum of three days after rainfall ceases. Risk of overflow at the treatment plant is assessed as minimal due to discharge occurring far out in the bay via a sea outfall.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria blooms and large accumulations of seaweed (macroalgae) in the beach zone. Large accumulations of plants can promote bacterial growth and extend the survival of fecal bacteria in water. Short-term pollution may occur during heavy rainfall. Risk of glass, waste, and chemical pollution.
