Årbyhus Badebro is a sand and stone beach approximately 300 meters long and 20 meters wide, located in Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. The beach features a bathing pier and rescue ring. Behind the beach is a 5-meter grass area bordered by high cliffs. The beach is classified as excellent based on measurements of intestinal enterococci and E. coli from 2018–2021. Access is on foot from Sønderstrandsvej via the SEAS NVE course facility grounds.

Water

Coastal bathing water in a bay. The beach is approximately 300 meters long and 20 meters wide, with a belt of stones and sand extending further seaward. Primary flow direction is eastward.

Location

Kalundborg Municipality, Denmark. Access on foot from Sønderstrandsvej via SEAS NVE's course facility grounds. No parking available. Only pedestrian access permitted to the beach.

Monitoring conducted minimum 4 times per year. Classification section revised annually in November following the bathing season.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent under EU bathing water directive based on intestinal enterococci and E. coli measurements from 2018–2021. Kalundborg Treatment Plant is identified as a source of fecal contamination. Short-term pollution typically results from heavy rainfall causing treatment plant overflow, usually lasting a maximum of 3 days after rainfall stops. Overflow risk is assessed as minimal despite eastward water flow, as discharge occurs far out in the bay via submarine pipeline and overflows at the treatment plant are very rare.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria blooms and large quantities of macroalgae. Cyanobacteria can produce toxins causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea. Large amounts of seaweed can promote bacterial growth and extend survival of fecal bacteria in water. Short-term pollution from treatment plant overflow during heavy rainfall. Glass shards, litter, and chemical contamination may occasionally occur.
