Åsø Strand

Åsø Strand is a 75-metre-long, 15-metre-wide beach located on the west coast of Langeland, 2 kilometres northwest of Tranekær. The beach comprises sand with small stones and crushed shells distributed across it. The northern section features a breakwater of large stones. The bathing water is classified as brackish water in Langelandssund.

Water

Brackish water in Langelandssund. Water depth gradually increases from the shore, remaining under 2 metres for 130 metres from the coast. Current direction is variable but primarily from the north.

Location

Located on Langeland's west coast, 2 kilometres northwest of Tranekær. Accessible via Aasøvej, which leads to a parking area at the beach. Toilets are available at the parking area.

Parking area, toilets, trash bins, dry toilet, warning sign for water quality deterioration.

Season

1 June to 1 September.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent quality, meeting all requirement values. Classification is based on routine water samples tested for E. coli and enterococci during the bathing season. Monitoring has been conducted since 2007, with classification reviewed annually.

Risks

A minor stream south of the beach discharges onto the beach and may contain high concentrations of faecal bacteria during certain periods; the stream may dry out at times during the bathing season. Tranekærafløbet stream discharges 700 metres north and may also contain high concentrations of faecal bacteria. Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up in the water's edge. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom. Low risk of phytoplankton bloom. Potential for sudden contamination from incidents such as oil spills, chemical leaks, septic tanks, or leisure boat accidents. Glass shards, litter, and chemical contamination are possible.
