Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Østrig is a 350-meter-long sandy beach located on the east coast of Langeland, facing Langelandsbælt. The beach is 10–15 meters wide and comprises primarily sand with scattered small and medium-sized stones. The seabed is similarly composed of fine sand with scattered stones. The beach is situated in a scenic natural landscape with green open areas on both sides.

Water

Brackish water body in Langelandsbælt. Water depth is less than 2 meters up to 75 meters from the shore. Current direction is primarily from the north.

Location

Østrig is located 2.5 km east of Tranekær on Langeland's east coast. The beach is accessed via Botofte Strandvej, where a parking area with toilet facilities is available.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring for faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) during the bathing season. The classification meets quality standards.

Risks

The stream Botofte Mose discharges north of the beach and may contain high concentrations of faecal bacteria; swimming in this discharge area is discouraged. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. Sudden contamination from boat accidents, slurry tanks, or sewage lines is possible.
