Løkkeby Strand is a 650-metre-long beach with fine sand on the east coast of Langeland, facing Langelandsbælt strait. The beach is 20 metres wide and situated in green natural surroundings with the Sylten wetland to the south and Stengade Forest to the north. Water depth increases gradually from the shore, with depths under 2 metres extending 100 metres from the coast. The bathing water is classified as brackish water.

Location

Løkkeby Strand is located on Langeland's east coast near Løkkeby summer house area. Access is via Løkkeby Strandvej road leading to the summer house area. The beach is marked by a blue line on overview maps.

Season

Routine water sampling occurs during the bathing season. Water quality classification is revised annually in May before the bathing season starts.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent (Udmærket kvalitet). Classification is based on routine sampling for faecal indicator bacteria E. coli and enterococci conducted during the bathing season. The classification meets required standards and is revised annually in May before the bathing season starts.

Risks

Several sources of faecal pollution are identified in the area. Maglemoseafløbet stream has an outlet at the beach but low discharge and high dilution in the strait, resulting in low impact on water quality. Akkermoserenden watercourse south of the beach has high pollution risk and serves as a recipient for five overflow structures that can discharge wastewater during heavy rain. Roløkke treatment plant 500 metres south discharges treated wastewater; an emergency overflow can cause short-term pollution if currents flow north. An overflow structure 2 kilometres south at Spodsbjerg can discharge wastewater during heavy rain with northward current risk. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Low risk of large seaweed (macroalgae) washup. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills are potential hazards.
