Auesee Treibsand

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Auesee is an artificial lake located in the Wesel district with a beach area of 512 meters. The lake covers 240 hectares and is situated in lowland terrain at less than 200 meters elevation. It is influenced by the nearby Rhine River. The lake has sandy substrate and naturally structured shorelines, with a maximum depth of 18 meters.

Water

Artificial lake covering 240 hectares. Maximum depth 18 meters. Water temperature ranges from 15.2 to 23.3°C with a mean of 20.4°C. pH averages 8.23 with range 8.16 to 8.36. Conductivity averages 473.75 µS/cm with range 467 to 487 µS/cm. Water transparency ranges from 0.95 to 2 meters. Mesotrophic with natural nutrient content level 2. Water renewal occurs through groundwater throughflow. Catchment area very small at less than 10 km².

Water Quality

Water quality rated as excellent in 2020, 2022, and 2023, and good in 2021. EU bathing water since at least 1992. No relevant pollution sources identified. No microbiological, chemical, or debris contamination in sediments.

Risks

Cercarial dermatitis (duck itch) present. Cyanobacteria blooms observed rarely within the last four years with low risk of future mass development. Low risk of future phytoplankton mass development. Occasional bird activity affecting the water.
