Vædebrovej 53

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Strand ved Vædebrovej 53 is a small beach on the east side of Mossø lake, approximately 2 km from Alken town in central Denmark. The beach is approximately 100 m long and 4 m wide with scattered stones and very shallow water with a sandy bottom. The bathing water has been classified as excellent, the highest classification possible, based on analysis data from 2006–2009. The beach is located within EU bird protection area no. 35 and habitat area no. 48.

Water

Mossø lake is 10 km long and 2 km wide with a surface area of 16.9 km². Mean depth is 9 m with maximum depth of 22 m. The lake is divided into two basins by a shallow bar extending from Emborg Odde. Water temperature in bathing areas during summer is 14–22 degrees Celsius. The bathing area has very shallow water with sandy bottom and scattered stones.

Location

Mossø lake, east side near Vædebrovej, approximately 2 km from Alken town, Skanderborg Municipality. Accessible by car from Vædebrovej with parking available.

Facilities

Shelter with table and benches, flag pole, handicapped toilet, waste bins, grilling area, parking, bonfire area, outdoor tables and benches.

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: Excellent (the highest classification). Over 95% of analyses from 2006–2009 showed E. Coli values below 500 and Enterococcus values below 200. The water is not subject to significant faecal pollution. Moderate risk of annual cyanobacteria blooms during summer months. Blue Flag designation awarded.

Risks

Overflow events from pump stations during heavy rainfall may cause temporary faecal pollution. Faecal pollution from scattered settlement is possible but assessed as not constituting substantial risk. Moderate risk of cyanobacteria blooms and algal blooms, particularly in late summer months, which can produce toxins including microcystins and anatoxin-a. Zebra mussels have spread throughout the Gudenå system since 2006.
