Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Vædebro Strand is a natural sandy beach approximately 400 metres long and 6 metres wide located on the east side of Mossø lake in central Jutland. The beach has very shallow water with a sandy bottom and scattered stones. The area behind the beach slopes steeply and is covered with grass and scattered vegetation. The water temperature in the bathing area ranges from 14 to 22 degrees Celsius during summer.

Water

Mossø is a freshwater lake 10 kilometres long and 2 kilometres wide. The lake is divided into two basins: a small shallow western basin and a larger deep eastern basin separated by a shallow sandbank. The lake is classified as type 9 (calcareous, non-brown water, freshwater, shallow). Mossø has moderate ecological status.

Location

Located on the east side of Mossø lake near Alken town in Skanderborg Municipality. Parking available at Vædebrovej approximately 2.5 kilometres from Alken. Access via Vædebrovej.

Season

Bathing water monitoring conducted throughout the entire bathing season. Potential cyanobacterial blooms occur typically in late summer months from April to October.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'Excellent', the highest classification under regulation no. 165 of 23 March 2009. Over 95% of bathing water analyses from 2006 to 2009 showed values below 500 for E. coli and 200 for enterococci. The beach is not subject to significant faecal pollution from overflow events or dispersed settlement.

Risks

Moderate risk of annual cyanobacterial blooms in late summer causing foam formation and surface blooms. Cyanobacteria produce four types of toxins: liver toxins, nerve toxins, endotoxins and cytotoxins. Contact with toxins can cause diarrhoea, headache, skin irritation, fever and nausea. Risk is greatest when swimmers ingest water containing algae. Children, elderly persons and those with weakened immunity are particularly vulnerable. Invasive zebra mussels have been recorded in the Gudenå system since 2006.
