Ballebro

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Ballebro is a bathing beach located on Als Fjord in Denmark, approximately 180 metres long and 2 to 15 metres wide. The beach is west of the ferry landing and features a bathing bridge. The seabed consists of sand with stones, mussel shells, and seaweed. Water depth reaches 0.5 metres at approximately 6 metres from shore and 1 metre at approximately 13.5 metres from shore.

Water

Als Fjord, a marine water body with brackish water. Salinity ranges from 16 to 24 parts per thousand. Current direction data from 2006 to 2019 shows predominantly westward, north-westward, northward, or southward flow.

Location

The beach is accessible via two routes: Færgevej and Ballebrovej. Færgevej leads to a large car park with waste bins, benches, and toilet facilities. Ballebro Kro restaurant is located immediately behind the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Monitoring occurs from 1 June to 15 September annually, testing for E. coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria. No threshold exceedances for faecal bacteria have been recorded in the last four years. Primary pollution sources identified include the combined sewer overflow structure from Sønderborg Kommune's utilities system during heavy rainfall, discharging into Ballegård Møllebæk, and individual household septic systems.

Risks

Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up, though this has not reduced water quality. Risk of faecal contamination during heavy rainfall from combined sewer overflows. Very low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms; no blooms have been observed at this location. No previous phytoplankton blooms recorded during the bathing season.
