Købingsmark Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Købingsmark Strand is a child-friendly bathing area approximately 1500 meters long and 10–20 meters wide on the top of Als, facing Lillebælt. The sandy beach with scattered gravel and stones features shallow water due to sandbars, making it suitable for families. Bathing structures including piers and slipways are available. The beach is located between two camping areas with a summer house district in between.

Water

Marine bathing water in Lillebælt with brackish water characteristics. Salinity ranges from 16–24 ‰. Water depth reaches 0.5 meters at approximately 8 meters from shore and 1 meter at approximately 22 meters from shore. The seabed consists of sand with scattered stones, macroalgae growth, and minor mussel areas. Current direction is predominantly westerly, typically following the coast in both directions.

Location

Located on Als facing Lillebælt in Sønderborg Municipality, Denmark. Public parking is available at Københingsmark Strand Camping. Access is provided via multiple pathways through the summer house area and from Augustenhof Camping.

Facilities

Bathing piers and slipways are present. Public parking is available at Københingsmark Strand Camping. Emergency rescue numbers are A465 at the parking area and A470 on the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on data from the last four years. Monitoring conducted from 1 June to 15 September by laboratory analysis for indicator bacteria E. coli and intestinal enterococci. Analysis results over the last four years show no exceedances of bacterial limit values.

Risks

Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up exists; bathing is generally discouraged during large quantities of seaweed in the shoreline due to potential toxin formation in decaying seaweed and protection of disease-causing bacteria. Heavy rainfall may cause temporary fecal pollution from the summer house area overflow via the pumping station, typically lasting a maximum of three days. Risk of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton blooms is very small; no blue-green algae have been observed on this beach.
