Varnæs Vig

Varnæs Vig is a bathing beach approximately 300 metres long and 6 metres wide on the western side of Varnæshoved in the south of Aabenraa Fjord. The beach consists of mixed sand and gravel with small stones at the water's edge. A bathing and boat pier extends approximately 150 metres from the shore, with water depth of about 4 metres at its end. The beach is classified as excellent quality, with very low concentrations of faecal bacteria.

Water

The water is part of Aabenraa Fjord. The seabed consists of stones on sandy bottom at the water's edge and extending some distance offshore, then sandy bottom. Water depth at the end of the pier is approximately 4 metres. Current in the area flows mostly in a westerly direction.

Location

The beach is located on the western side of Varnæshoved in the south of Aabenraa Fjord. A parking area is available in front of the beach, equipped with an information board, warning sign, rescue and first aid station, and toilet facilities.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as excellent quality based on control samples taken regularly during 2019–2022. Concentrations of faecal bacteria are very low. The contribution to pollution from nearby private watercourses and surrounding areas is assessed as relatively low.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms can occur, typically following periods of heavy rainfall with nutrient leaching followed by warm conditions. Large quantities of macroalgae (seaweed) can accumulate at the shore edge. Sudden contamination may occur from incidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, or sewage pipes. Contamination from two small private watercourses on the beach is possible following heavy rainfall, though such events are typically short-lived, lasting a maximum of three days.
