Det marine center - Skivedepotet is a newly created bathing beach established in 2019 on Kær, facing Als Sund near the former military training grounds. The beach is approximately 50 meters long and 3 meters wide, with reed vegetation and larger stones covering the surface. It is situated in the northwestern part of Sønderborg near Alssund Bridge and lies within a protected nature area. The beach is less suitable for sunbathing due to its location at the foot of a stone dyke.

Water

Marine brackish water in Als Sund. Salinity ranges from 16–24 ‰. Water depth reaches 0.5 meters approximately 5 meters from the shore and 1 meter approximately 20 meters from the shore. The seabed consists of larger growths of bladder wrack and small stones for the first 8 meters from the water's edge, becoming more sandy beyond that. Current in Als Sund flows predominantly in north or south directions.

Location

Located on Kær in the northwestern part of Sønderborg near Alssund Bridge, facing Als Sund. Access is via Skydebanevej. A small parking area is available at the beach. A handicap-accessible bridge connects to the beach.

Water Quality

Water classification: Excellent (preliminary classification as of 2019, pending full classification). Monitoring conducted by laboratory analysis for indicator bacteria E. coli and Intestinal enterococci during the bathing season (1 June to 15 September). Risk of fecal contamination primarily from households with mechanical treatment systems discharging directly to Als Sund on the Sundeved side. Any fecal contamination is expected to be short-lived, typically lasting no more than 3 days.

Risks

Small risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up on the beach. Very low risk of cyanobacteria/blue-green algae blooms in this region. No blue-green algae have been observed at this beach. Low risk of plant plankton blooms during the bathing season. Manure spreading occurs on fields north of the beach and on the Sundeved side, which could potentially lead to fecal bacterial contamination via surface water under unfavorable circumstances.
