Lusig Strand is a sand beach with small stones and some larger rocks located in Als Fjord, Denmark. The bathing area extends approximately 450 metres in length and 4–8 metres in width. The seabed consists of sand with scattered large stones, with water depth reaching 0.5 metres at about 15 metres from shore and 1 metre at about 40 metres, making it very child-friendly. A bathing pier is available. Seaweed and other algae may wash ashore, particularly in autumn.

Water

Marine brackish water in Als Fjord. Salinity ranges from 16–24 ‰. Water depth reaches 0.5 metres at approximately 15 metres from shore and 1 metre at approximately 40 metres. Current direction is primarily easterly, southeasterly, or westerly, with occasional northerly flow. Currents generally follow the coastline and are determined by water movement in Als Fjord.

Location

Lusig Strand is accessed via Lusigvej, which leads to a public car park with toilets. The beach is near Lusig Forest (Lusig Skov) and the locality of Nordborg. A rest area for horse riders following the Als riding route is available at the car park.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent. Monitored from 1 June to 15 September annually for indicator bacteria E. coli and intestinal enterococci. Analysis results from the past four years show no exceedances of bacterial limit values. Potential sources of faecal pollution are residential dwellings with mechanical treatment systems discharging to drainage fields, watercourses, or directly to sea. Pollution events are typically brief, lasting a maximum of 3 days, as currents rapidly dilute and transport contamination away from the bathing area.

Risks

Small risk of seaweed (macroalgae) washup; bathing is generally discouraged during large accumulations of seaweed due to potential toxin production in decomposing matter and protection of pathogenic bacteria. Very low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms; none have been observed at this beach. No previous phytoplankton blooms observed during the bathing season. Heavy rainfall may cause temporary pollution lasting up to 3 days.
