Begtrupvig Øst Strand is a child-friendly sandy beach located along Begtrup Bay in eastern Denmark. The beach stretches over the eastern part of a larger beach system and is 20–30 metres wide with shallow water extending far from shore. The water depth reaches 2 metres at a distance of more than 100–150 metres from the shoreline. The beach is backed by a large summer cottage area. Water quality is classified as excellent.

Water

The beach borders Begtrup Bay. Salinity is approximately 25 ‰. Water temperature varies between 15 °C and 22 °C during the bathing season. The beach is 20–30 metres wide with shallow water for a large distance from shore.

Location

Begtrupvig Øst Strand is located along Begtrupvig Strandvej in Begtrup Bay. Access to the beach is available via public roads from both the east (Strands) and west (Knebel). Parking is available in the eastern part of the beach at the end of Begtrupvig Strandvej. The responsible authority is Syddjurs Municipality, located at Lundbergsvej 2, 8400 Ebeltoft.

Facilities

Rescue station. No public toilets. Parking available in the eastern part of the beach.

Season

Monitoring and bathing season runs from 1 May to 15 September.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Regular monitoring occurs during the bathing season (1 May to 15 September) with 4 water samples taken and analysed. Possible pollution sources include overflow from the sewerage system in Strands town, faecal contamination from scattered dwellings and manure spills, blue-green algae, other microscopic algae, seaweed, oil spills from ships, and pollen accumulations. Risk of short-term faecal contamination from wastewater is minor, particularly following heavy rainfall. Risk of blue-green algae blooms is very low due to high salinity. Risk of chemical contamination from ships is assessed as low.

Risks

Possible short-term faecal contamination from sewerage overflow during heavy rainfall. Risk of microscopic algae blooms is small. Risk of large seaweed accumulation is small. Pollen accumulations occur regularly in spring and early summer. Blue-green algae and other microscopic algae can cause health effects including diarrhoea, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and headache. Seaweed decomposition can produce odours and bacterial growth. Dogs should be kept on a lead from 1 April to 30 September.
