Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Begtrupvig Vest Strand is a child-friendly sandy beach located along Begtrup Bay in western Denmark, stretching approximately 1.2 km along the western part of a larger beach system. The beach is 20–30 meters wide with shallow water extending far from shore, reaching 2 meters depth at 100–150 meters from the waterline. The beach is classified as having excellent water quality and features seaweed deposits along the waterline.

Water

Begtrup Bay, a brackish water body with salinity of approximately 25 ‰. Water temperature varies between 15 °C and 22 °C during the bathing season. Distance to 2 meters depth is 100–150 meters from shore.

Location

Begtrupvig Vest Strand is situated along Begtrupvig Strandvej in Syddjurs Municipality, Ebeltoft area. Public access is available via road on both the eastern and western sides of the beach. A parking area is located at the western end of the beach near Meteorvej.

Facilities

Rescue station. Parking area at the western end near Meteorvej. No public toilets.

Season

Official monitoring and bathing season runs from 1 May to 15 September.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. Bacterial levels are normally low but have been slightly elevated in some years. Four water samples are collected during the bathing season (1 May to 15 September) and analysed. Identified pollution sources include faecal pollution from dispersed settlement, manure spillage, small boat toilet tank emptying, algae blooms (blue-green algae, other microscopic algae, seaweed), oil spills from ships, and pollen accumulations.

Risks

Low risk of blue-green algae bloom due to high salinity limiting growth conditions. Minor risk of short-term faecal pollution from rainwater causing possible connection errors. Low risk of toilet tank emptying contamination. Small risk of microalgae blooms and seaweed accumulation. Low risk of chemical pollution from ships. Recurrent pollen accumulations possible.
