Bystranden is a bathing site located in Holbæk town centre, adjoining Holbæk Harbour. It features a sandy beach approximately 170 metres long and 15 metres wide, continuing into the water. The bathing area is marked by two large yellow buoys and several small red buoys. The water becomes deep quickly due to the site's location within a harbour, reaching approximately 0.5 metres depth at 5 metres from shore and 1 metre depth at 8 metres from shore.

Water

Fjord water body adjoining Holbæk Harbour. Beach extends approximately 170 metres in length and 15 metres in width. Water depth reaches approximately 0.5 metres at 5 metres from shore and 1 metre at 8 metres from shore. Current direction varies but typically flows west-southwest.

Location

Located in Holbæk town centre along Blegstræde road. A parking area is available before the access road to the beach. Facilities including changing rooms, toilets, and bathing facilities are located between the parking area and the beach.

Facilities

Lifeguard equipment, toilets, changing rooms, bathing facilities, parking area, rescue ring, information board, and grilling area are available.

Season

1 May to 1 September. Water quality is routinely monitored throughout the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as EXCELLENT based on data from 2019–2021. Monitoring is conducted during the bathing season using indicator bacteria E. coli and enterococci to assess faecal contamination. Potential contamination sources include emptying of moored boat wastewater tanks, overflow structures in the traffic harbour, and rainwater drainage pipes. Contamination episodes typically last 1–3 days due to relatively low concentrations. Bathers are advised to swim within the marked bathing area where sewage outlets have low influence on water quality.

Risks

Faecal contamination from boat wastewater tank emptying, sewage overflow structures, and rainwater drainage during heavy rainfall. Low risk of cyanobacteria, phytoplankton, and macroalgal growth. Other occasional contamination sources include glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution such as oil spills. Bathers should avoid swimming directly opposite sewage outlets and should refrain from bathing if water is unclear and feet cannot be seen at knee depth.
