Mediterranean Sea bathing areas near Nice, with 26 sampling points for water quality monitoring.

Location

Nice, France. Monitoring sites distributed between La Lanterne and Coco Beach, with municipal authority extending 300 metres from the shoreline.

Facilities

Daily visual surveillance of water quality. Daily cleaning of floating macro-debris by municipal cleaning boats. Municipal agents perform daily water observation.

Season

1 June to 30 September 2024. Pre-season sampling between 10 and 20 May. Weekly monitoring with results available within 36 hours minimum.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci levels. Good quality threshold: Escherichia coli below 1000/100ml, intestinal enterococci below 370/100ml. Pollution sources include domestic, urban, industrial, and agricultural activities; sewerage and stormwater networks; and natural watercourse inputs. Water quality is evaluated by the Agence Régionale de Santé (ARS) according to European Directive 2006/7/CE standards.

Risks

Bacteriological pollution from sewerage network failures, stormwater overflows during rain, and pathogenic germs from swimmers. Potential chemical pollution (pesticides, nitrates, phosphates, heavy metals, PCBs, hydrocarbons), physical pollution (suspended solids), and thermal pollution. Marine pollution including hydrocarbons and algal proliferation (Ostreopsis ovata).
