Water

Coastal seawater along the Nice shoreline. The mayor's authority extends to 300 metres from the communal shoreline.

Location

Nice, France. Monitoring covers 26 sampling sites distributed between La Lanterne and Coco Beach along the Nice coastline.

Season

1 June to 30 September 2024. Pre-season testing conducted between 10 and 20 May.

Water Quality

Official bathing season monitoring applies standards for Escherichia coli (threshold: 1000 per 100 ml) and intestinal Enterococci (threshold: 370 per 100 ml) classified as good quality. Weekly bacteriological controls are performed. Pollution sources identified include domestic sewage, urban runoff, industrial and agricultural pollutants, with potential for bacterial, chemical, physical, and thermal pollution. Temporary sewer overflows during heavy rainfall and the Haliotis water treatment plant outfall at Carras are documented pollution sources. The harmful algae species Ostreopsis ovata has been documented.

Risks

Pathogenic germs introduced via swimmers, sewerage and stormwater networks due to structural deficiencies and rainfall overload, and terrestrial inputs from watercourses. Macro-waste floating on water is a concern. Potential for harmful algal blooms from Ostreopsis ovata.
