Boccadasse is a pebble and shingle beach located in front of a historic fishing village in Genoa, Liguria. The beach features artificial structures and cliff formations. It is a free public beach with tourist services, accommodation facilities, and dining establishments. The area is situated along the Corso Italia promenade and the SS1 coastal road.

Water

Coastal Mediterranean water (Ligurian Sea). The beach itself is characterised by coarse-grained pebbles and shingle, adjacent to a steep cliff face extending eastward.

Location

Genoa, Liguria, Italy. The bathing water is located in the Genoa-Camogli water body area, extending 1.032 km.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2020–2023: POOR. The bathing water is located in an area influenced by the Sturla wastewater treatment plant, which discharges approximately 630 m to 1.5 km from the shore. Sewer conduits discharge approximately 600–760 m from the sampling point. Enhanced monitoring frequency is in place for 2024 due to the poor classification.

Risks

The bathing area is at the mouth of the Rio Boccadasse stream, which directly impacts water quality. During heavy rainfall and upstream flooding, increased stream flow can transport wastewater downstream. The area is affected by Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms. Reference station data (Bagnara) recorded exceedances of 30,000 cells/litre in July 2019, and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July 2022 and 2023. Inhalation of aerosols from Ostreopsis ovata causes temporary and reversible respiratory irritation and possible fever in sensitive individuals.
