Bølling Sø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Bølling Sø is a bathing lake located at Engesvang on the border between Ikast-Brande and Silkeborg municipalities. The lake was formed after the last ice age and restored as a major nature recovery project, reopening in 2005. Swimming is permitted only west of high-voltage power lines and exclusively from two pontoon bridges at Kragelundvej and Ellevej due to vegetation in the lake. The water is brown in colour due to humus substances released from peat sediments, with visibility typically under 0.5 metres.

Water

Bølling Sø is a lake covering approximately 360 hectares, located at 67 metres above sea level on the Jutland ridge. Water depth ranges from 1.5 to 3.8 metres, deepest in the northern part. The lake bed is primarily peat with areas of sand. Water colour is brown. The lake has no tributaries; it receives water from rainfall, surrounding areas, and groundwater. Skygge Å (part of the Karup Å system) discharges into the northwestern end of the lake.

Location

Bølling Sø is situated at Engesvang near the municipal boundary between Ikast-Brande and Silkeborg. Parking is available on the western side of Kragelundvej (east side reserved for loading/unloading only) and at the end of the gravel road near Ellevej. A large car park with views over the lake is located on Kragelundvej south of the lake.

Facilities

Two pontoon bridges for swimming access (at Kragelundvej and Ellevej). Toilets, information pavilion, tables, benches, and a fire pit are located at the large car park on Kragelundvej. Information boards with rules for sailing, bathing, and fishing are posted at both bridge locations.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as 'excellent', the highest classification possible. Classification is based on control samples from the previous four years and is revised annually before the bathing season begins. Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) bloom is assessed as low. Risk of phytoplankton bloom is assessed as low. No known faecal pollution sources in the immediate area.
