Gedser Nord is a sand beach located north of Gedser Marina on southern Falster. The beach stretches approximately 950 metres in length and 15 metres in width, with scattered stones and a sandy bottom. Water depth remains under 2 metres for the first 40 metres from the shore. The beach is classified as excellent quality bathing water based on data from 2011–2014.

Water

Brackish water. Water currents vary in direction but predominantly flow north (26% of measurements) and south/southwest (16% of measurements). Water temperature in the bathing season ranges from 14–23°C.

Location

North of Gedser Marina on Sydfalster. Access by road via Vesterhave or by public transport on bus line 740. Located in Guldborgsund Municipality.

Season

Official monitoring period: 1 May to 1 September. A minimum of 6 samples are collected during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water is classified as excellent quality. Occasional brief faecal contamination occurs, originating from the stream Svinehavesøløbet which discharges onto the beach. The stream has a high pollution level. Risk of cyanobacteria blooms is present, especially during prolonged warm, sunny weather and easterly winds. General risk of macroalgae wash-up is low, though accumulation can occur along the shoreline. Glass shards, litter, oil spills, and other chemical pollution may occasionally occur.

Risks

Faecal contamination from the Svinehavesøløbet stream discharge. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, particularly in warm, sunny conditions with easterly winds; algae produce toxins causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Accumulation of macroalgae along the shoreline. Occasional glass shards, litter, oil spills, and chemical pollution. Sudden contamination may result from accidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, and sewage pipes.
