Gedser Syd is a sandy beach located south of Gedser harbour on southern Falster. The beach is approximately 350 metres long and 10–20 metres wide, with sandy bottom and water depth under 2 metres for the first approximately 50 metres from the shore. The bathing water is classified as excellent and is brackish in nature.

Water

Brackish water body. Sandy beach approximately 350 metres long and 10–20 metres wide. Water depth under 2 metres for the first approximately 50 metres from the shore. Water temperature during bathing season ranges from 14–22°C. Water currents from highly variable directions.

Location

Southern Falster south of Gedser harbour. Access via Sdr. Boulevard or public bus line 740 to Gedser Torv. Parking available at Sdr. Boulevard south of the beach.

Season

Official monitoring period is 1 May to 1 September, with a minimum of 6 samples taken during this season.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent according to Announcement no. 939 of 18/09/2012, based on data from 2011–2014. Very few exceedances of bathing water quality requirements occurred during the monitoring period. The Pumpekanalen outlet carrying treated wastewater from Gedser treatment plant is located 700 metres southeast of the control station.

Risks

Blue-green algae blooms may occur, particularly during extended warm sunny weather and easterly winds. Macroalgae accumulation is possible along the shoreline. Glass shards, litter, oil spills and other chemical contamination may occasionally occur. Sudden pollution can arise from accidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks and sewage pipes.
