Gedesby Strand is a sandy beach located on the eastern coast of Falster along the Baltic Sea near Gedesby. The beach is approximately 1,750 metres long and 30 metres wide, with water depth under 2 metres for the first 80 metres from the shore. The beach is classified as having excellent bathing water quality based on data from 2011–2014. The area is backed by a dike and beach meadow, with a summer house settlement at Gedesby and forest plantations and wetlands further inland.

Water

Baltic Sea (Østersøen). Brackish water classification. Sandy beach with sand bottom. Approximately 1,750 metres long and 30 metres wide. Water depth under 2 metres for the first 80 metres from shore. Water temperature during bathing season ranges from 13–23 °C. Water currents are variable but predominantly flow south to southeast (24% of measurements).

Location

Gedesby, eastern coast of Falster, Denmark. Access via Kobbelsøvej and Fællesdigevej. Bus line 740 provides public transport access. Multiple parking areas are available along the beach.

Season

Official monitoring period: 1 May to 1 September. Water temperature during this period ranges from 13–23 °C.

Water Quality

Water is classified as excellent quality according to Bekendtgørelse nr. 939 of 18/09/2012, based on data from 2011–2014. The stretch is free from wastewater discharge. Minor short-term faecal pollution events are occasionally observed, with sources unknown. Swimmers should avoid bathing immediately after prolonged heavy rain, if water appears discoloured or smells like sewage, or if debris is visible.

Risks

Short-term faecal pollution events of unknown origin can occur. Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms are possible, especially during prolonged warm, sunny weather and easterly winds, and can produce toxins causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation occurs at the water's edge and can harbour bacteria. Glass shards, litter, oil spills, and other chemical pollution can occasionally occur. Swimmers should be aware of potential sudden contamination from boat incidents, slurry tankers, and sewer pipes.
