Bryrup Søbad is a bathing area located in Bryrup Lake in southeastern Silkeborg Municipality, Denmark. The lake is relatively deep with an average depth of 4.6 metres and a maximum depth of 9 metres. The bathing zone features beach sand on the lakebed and shore, with a bathing bridge providing access to deeper water. Reeds grow in shallow water on both sides of the bathing area. The water is classified as excellent quality based on faecal bacteria content.

Water

Bryrup Lake is a long, narrow freshwater lake with four inflows and one outflow. Average depth is 4.6 metres; maximum depth is 9 metres. Water retention time is approximately 80 days. The lakebed is predominantly muddy except at the designated bathing area where sand is laid.

Location

Bryrup town, southeastern Silkeborg Municipality. The bathing area is located in the town itself, accessed from Sportsvej where a small car park is available.

Public toilet, bathing bridge, permanent swimming advice signage regarding algae hazards.

Season

Official monitoring period runs from 1 June to 1 September.

Water Quality

Water is classified as excellent quality based on faecal bacteria content monitored over the last four years. Classification is based solely on faecal bacteria levels; algae content is not included in the classification. The lake receives significant nutrient loads from agricultural land, causing notable algae growth and periodic cyanobacteria blooms in summer.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacteria blooms during summer months, some species of which produce toxins. Risk of other plankton algae blooms which can raise water pH and cause skin irritation. Potential for faecal bacteria contamination from misconnected private drainage systems or stormwater runoff during heavy rainfall. Chemical contamination possible but unlikely from vehicle accidents on roads near the lake.
