Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Karlsø is a shallow lake located in a heathland and bog area with an surface area of 7.6 hectares. The bathing water is classified as Excellent. The lake has a maximum depth of 3.5 metres and a mean depth of 2.3 metres. Water inflow occurs through Karlsø Stream, and the lake drains into Bryrup Langsø. The bathing beach is approximately 150 metres long and consists of sand approximately 30 metres wide.

Water

Shallow lake with surface area of 7.6 hectares, maximum depth of 3.5 metres, and mean depth of 2.3 metres. Water depth at the bathing beach ranges from 0 to 1.5 metres with a gentle slope. Inflow from Karlsø Stream; outflow to Bryrup Langsø. Catchment area is 1100 hectares, with 80 per cent being agricultural land.

Location

The beach is located at the eastern end of Karlsø lake in Horsens municipality, Denmark. Access is via Vindbjergvej. Parking is available at the beach, and an information sign is displayed.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent, based on data from the preceding year and three previous bathing seasons. The lake is nutrient-rich. Monitoring is carried out minimum 4 times per year.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms can occur, particularly after periods of heavy rainfall followed by warm weather. Signs include discoloured water and foam formation. Cyanobacteria can produce toxic substances causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Phytoplankton growth occurs during the bathing season, reducing water clarity. Large accumulations of aquatic plant material may occur at the shoreline and can produce toxins as it decays. Occasional occurrences of glass fragments, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills are possible.
