Hundsø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Hundsø is a small, isolated forest lake with naturally brown-coloured water that is normally relatively clear, though algae growth occasionally occurs during summer months. The lake has a soft muddy bottom, moderate depth averaging 3 metres with a maximum depth of 7.5 metres, and experiences minimal water exchange due to the absence of inflows and outflows. The water is classified as excellent based on four years of monitoring data.

Water

Small, isolated freshwater lake with predominantly soft, muddy bottom. Mean depth 3 metres, maximum depth 7.5 metres. No significant inflows or outflows; negligible water circulation and no dominant current direction.

Location

The lake is located in state-owned forest north of Bryrup, approximately one kilometre east of the main road between Bryrup and Them. Access is via gravel roads. The lake is surrounded entirely by forest.

Season

1 June to 1 September. Water quality monitoring occurs during this period.

Water Quality

Water is classified as excellent based on data from the previous four years. No wastewater discharges enter the lake. Potential sources of faecal contamination are limited to bathers and animals. No real risk of chemical pollution due to the lake's isolated location. Nutrient content is relatively low.

Risks

Limited risk of cyanobacteria blooms due to low nutrient content, though some algae growth occurs during summer months and occasionally reaches higher than expected levels. Algae growth is believed to be influenced by heavy bathing pressure. Risk of harmful blooms of other phytoplankton is modest due to low nutrient content. Algal growth is normally not substantial enough to cause health problems for swimmers.
