Karlenes Badested is a bathing spot located at the northwestern end of Buresø lake in a forest margin setting. The beach area consists of forest floor with sparse tree coverage. The water is fresh, with a sandy bottom that slopes gradually, reaching approximately 0.5 metres depth at 13 metres from the shore. There is typically no current and no dominant flow direction.

Location

Access to Karlenes Badested is via Jørlunde Overdrev. Parking is limited for vehicles. The bathing spot is situated at Buresø lake in the Allerød Municipality area. To the north of the catchment are ecologically managed agricultural lands; to the south and west are summer house areas and forests.

Facilities

Parking with very few spaces; waste bins. Not available: bathing pier, toilets, tables and benches, grill, bonfire area, kiosk, public transport nearby. No lifeguards or rescue equipment; swimming is at own risk.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored 10 times per year by Allerød Kommune. If health risks are identified, warning signs are posted and notifications made on the municipality website. The main potential pollution sources are bathing guests and animals, as there are no known direct outlets to the lake.

Risks

Swimmers itch (cercarial dermatitis) caused by parasitic flatworm larvae occurred in 1997 and 2001. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms can occur during prolonged warm and calm weather, causing skin and eye irritation; ingestion can cause headache, diarrhoea, and nausea. Risk of macrophyte and phytoplankton accumulation is assessed as low.
