Farum Sø, Doctor's Bay is a freshwater lake bathing area located south of Søvej in Farum, Denmark. The beach has a sand and grass surface with a length of 12 meters and a width of 5 meters. The water depth in the bay is less than 0.5 meters, and the lake bed consists of sand with patches of reed plants. The lake has shown improved conditions in recent years with clearer water and fewer algal blooms.

Freshwater lake. Beach length 12 meters, beach width 5 meters, water depth less than 0.5 meters in the bay. Lake bed consists of sand with patches of reed plants. No strong underwater currents are expected at this bathing area.

Location

The beach is located south of Søvej number 4 in Farum. Parking is available at Farum Hovedgade. The immediate surroundings include the Farum Church and residential properties with larger gardens and parks.

Season

Approximately June 1 to September 1. Water quality is monitored at least 10 times during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as good. Historical classifications over the past 10 years show predominantly good quality, with one excellent rating in 2015. Potential sources of fecal pollution include three combined sewer overflow outlets located at 31 meters, 150 meters, and 465 meters from the beach, which may discharge diluted wastewater during heavy rainfall. Contamination from these overflows is typically short-term, lasting at most 3 days after heavy rainfall. The average frequency of overflows is 29 per year for outlet F-U7, 8 per year for F-U8, and 49 per year for F-U9.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) can occur, potentially producing toxic substances that may cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea upon contact or ingestion. Concentrations can be higher at the lake shore depending on wind direction. Algae can cause foam formations and discoloration. The bacterium Aeromonas veronii naturally occurs in the lake; the health authority assessed in 2009 that typical concentrations pose no greater infection risk than usual, though persons with open wounds are advised against bathing during midsummer when bacterial levels are highest. Cercarial dermatitis (ikter) caused by parasitic flatworm larvae is known to occur in lakes, though Furesø Municipality is not aware of residents experiencing symptoms after bathing in Farum Sø.
