Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Christiansminde is a sandy beach located in southeastern Svendborg, stretching approximately 230 metres along Svendborg Sound. The beach features fine sand with occasional small stones and is backed by a large recreational area with playgrounds, mini-golf, dining facilities, changing rooms, and showers. A bathing pier and wheelchair-accessible ramp provide water access. The beach is designated with the Blue Flag environmental certification.

Water

Saltwater body in the South Funen Archipelago (Det Sydfynske Øhav), classified as saltwater. Water depth less than 2 metres extends 50–100 metres from shore. Current direction is variable depending on wind conditions but primarily from south-southwest. Tidal range is less than 0.5 metres.

Bathing pier, wheelchair-accessible ramp, toilets including disabled toilet, showers, changing rooms, lifeguard tower, rescue equipment, first aid station, life rings, trash bins, waste sorting, drinking water, kiosk, restaurant, mobile phone coverage across entire beach, Blue Flag certification. Dogs not permitted on beach but allowed on leash in rear beach area.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent. Classification based on monitoring results from the last four years. Routine samples collected during bathing season (1 June – 15 September) are analysed for E. coli and Enterococci bacteria. Risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) and phytoplankton blooms assessed as low. Potential sources of faecal pollution include stormwater discharge near Christiansminde Hotel and Svendborg Sound Marina, and Kobberbæk stream approximately 1.4 km west, though stream water is heavily diluted in Svendborg Sound.

Risks

Strong current in Svendborg Sound a few metres from bathing pier. Risk of washed-up seaweed (macroalgae) at water's edge; bathing discouraged in areas with large accumulations due to toxin formation in decaying seaweed and pathogenic bacteria. Stormwater discharge outlets pose risk of short-term faecal contamination. Glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills may occur. Sudden contamination possible from boat accidents, slurry tanks, or sewage lines.
