Smørmosen is a sandy beach located on the eastern coast of Thurø island in Denmark. The beach stretches 250 metres and features fine sand with occasional small stones, backed by a green area with extensive facilities including mini-golf, playground, and ice cream shop. The beach is part of a longer coastline extending from Øgavl to Thurø Rev, with fine sandy conditions at Smørmosen giving way to rockier terrain north and south of this main bathing area. The beach is easily accessible from parking areas in Smørmose Skov and Østerskov.

Water

Saltwater in the South Funen Archipelago (Det Sydfynske Øhav). Water depth less than 2 metres extends approximately 100 metres from shore. The seabed consists of sand with few stones. Tidal range is less than 0.5 metres. Current direction varies with wind conditions but primarily flows from the south.

Location

Nearest address: Gyldenstensvej 10, 5700 Svendborg, Denmark. Accessible from parking areas in Smørmose Skov and Østerskov, with Thurø Rev accessed from the car park at the end of Østerskovvej. Rescue number: H530.

Facilities

Blue Flag beach. Parking available. Toilet facilities. Bus access. Kiosk and restaurant. Mobile coverage across the entire beach. Bathing bridge. Lifesaving equipment and first aid kit in the kiosk. Information boards. Waste bins and waste sorting. Facilities in the green area behind the beach include mini-golf, playground, ice cream shop, changing rooms, tables and benches, and a slide at the end of the bathing bridge. Dogs are not permitted on the beach.

Official monitoring season: 1 June – 15 September.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Classification is based on routine control samples taken during the bathing season (1 June – 15 September) analysed for E. coli and Enterococcus bacteria. The classification is recalculated annually based on the last four years of monitoring data.

Risks

Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) wash-up at the water's edge, particularly at the northern end of the beach; bathing near large quantities of decomposing seaweed is not recommended. Risk of cyanobacteria and phytoplankton blooms assessed as low but can occur during prolonged warm periods with high nutrient levels. Possible presence of glass shards, litter, and chemical pollution including oil spills. Waterborne bacteria from accidental discharges from pleasure boats, slurry tanks, or sewage pipes can occur suddenly.
