Slotshagen

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Slotshagen is a sandy beach located on the eastern side of Tåsinge island at Valdemar Slot, facing Thurø Sound and Lunkebugten. The beach stretches approximately 600 metres northward along Valdemar Slot and adjoining fields. It is very shallow and child-friendly, and often sheltered from wind. The beach is part of the Blue Flag environmental certification scheme.

Water

Saltwater in the South Funen archipelago. Water depth less than 2 metres for 200–600 metres from shore. Sand bottom with few small stones. Beach width 3–30 metres, beach length 140 metres. Current direction is variable depending on wind conditions, primarily from the southwest. Tidal range is less than 0.5 metres.

Eastern Tåsinge at Valdemar Slot, Svendborg Kommune, Denmark. Address: Slotsalleen 100F, 5700 Svendborg. Parking available at Valdemar Slot. Ferry service (Helge) operates from the southern boundary near the castle bridge.

Season

Routine monitoring and quality control samples are collected during the bathing season from 1 June to 15 September. Beach classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season starts.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent based on analysis of routine samples from the past four years. Samples are collected during the bathing season (1 June to 15 September) and analysed for E. coli and Enterococci. No known sources of faecal pollution that would affect bathing water quality have been registered. Results are published on Svendborg Kommune's website and in the Badevandsudsigten app, which also warns of risk of short-term faecal pollution from wastewater treatment plant overflows.

Risks

Risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) and phytoplankton blooms is assessed as low, though blooms can occur during prolonged warm periods with high nutrient levels. Some algae can produce toxins causing headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea upon contact or ingestion; children and immunocompromised persons are particularly vulnerable. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) wash-up at water's edge; bathing and children playing near large quantities of rotting seaweed is discouraged due to potential toxin formation and disease-causing bacteria. Glass fragments, litter, and chemical pollutants including oil spills may occur. Sudden pollution from leisure boat accidents, slurry tanks, or sewage lines is possible.
