Colonia Porcelli is a bathing beach in Senigallia, Marche, classified in category C with water quality classification E. The beach is composed of gravel of calcareous-siliceous origin with an average slope of 5% both above and below water. The beach extends 1,100 metres in length and 30 metres in width, with a distance of 50 metres between medium-low and high water levels. The surrounding area consists of urban and tourist settlements with railway line passages.

Water Quality

Water quality classification E. Escherichia coli monitoring conducted by ARPAM in 2010 showed varying results ranging from below detection limit to 300 CFU/100 ml. Wastewater treatment provided by an activated sludge plant with capacity 20,000 cubic metres per day or 100,000 equivalent inhabitants, serving approximately 39,300 equivalent inhabitants from urban settlements and approximately 770 from industrial activities. Seasonal fluctuations occur in summer months with approximately 10,300–20,500 equivalent inhabitants from tourist activity.

Risks

Overflow discharges from the combined sewer system occur during intense rainfall events, with discharge points directed to alternative recipients. An oil spill incident occurred on 04/04/2007 when fuel oil was discharged into the sea due to pipeline rupture at the API Refinery, causing precautionary closure of the bathing area. Phytoplankton bloom of non-toxic Fibrocapsa japonica occurred in August 2009, characterized by brownish-red discoloration and oily consistency of water.
