Lungomare di Montemarciano is a bathing beach located in Montemarciano, Ancona province, in the Marche region. The beach features shingle of calcareous origin with an average slope of 7% on both emerged and submerged areas. The beach is 500 meters long and 50 meters wide. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements with a railway line passing through. The beach is classified as Category C.

Water

Marine water body (Corpo idrico: Senigallia_Ancona). The distance between medium-low and high water (safe water limit) is 10 meters. Astronomical tidal range is 30–50 centimeters. Beach area: 0.15934 square kilometers.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (as of the profile date). The Vallechiara treatment plant, a biological BNR facility with anaerobic digestion, serves the municipality and several surrounding communities. Monthly monitoring by ARPAM in 2010 showed the treatment plant compliant with authorized limits. Escherichia coli measurements in 2010 ranged from below detection limit to 3000 CFU/100 ml in September.

Risks

The bathing area experienced a major incident on 04/04/2007 when fuel oil spilled from the API refinery pipeline into the sea, causing temporary closure until late May 2007. Massive blooms of the non-toxic alga Fibrocapsa japonica occurred in August 2009 and August 2010, causing reddish-brown coloration and oily consistency of water. Overflow points from the sewage system are located along the beach and discharge to different outlets when capacity is exceeded.
