A beach in Montemarciano, Ancona province in the Marche region. The beach has calcareous gravel with an average slope of 7% and extends 500 m in length and 50 m in width. The distance between medium-low and high water mark is 10 m, with astronomical tides of 30–50 cm. The surrounding area consists of urban settlements with a railway line passing through.

Water Quality

Classification E (poor water quality). The area is served by the Vallechiara wastewater treatment plant in Falconara M.ma, which uses biological treatment with BNR and anaerobic digestion. The plant serves approximately 70,000 inhabitants and 3,500 inhabitants equivalent from industrial activities. Monthly controls of Escherichia coli at the treatment plant during 2010 showed varying levels, with values ranging from below detection limit to 3,000 CFU/100 ml in September.

Risks

A major oil spill occurred on 04/04/2007 when fuel oil was released from the API refinery, causing temporary closure of the bathing area until end of May. Fibrocapsa japonica (non-toxic brown algae) blooms occurred in August 2009 and August 2010, causing reddish-brown discoloration and oily water consistency. The Rigatta stream receives discharges from the treatment plant and crosses the API refinery before discharging directly into the sea.
