A pebble beach located in Montemarciano, Ancona, in the Marche region. The beach has a calcareous-siliceous pebble composition with a 7% average slope on both emerged and submerged sections. The beach extends 500 m in length and 50 m in width, with a distance of 10 m between mean low and high water marks. The surrounding area is characterized by urban settlements and a railway line.

Coastal marine water body (Senigallia_Ancona). Beach area 0.52896. Astronomical tidal range 30–50 cm. Submerged slope equivalent to emerged beach slope of 7%.

Water Quality

Classification E. The Vallechiara treatment plant (biological BNR with anaerobic digestion) serves approximately 70,000 inhabitants and 3,500 equivalent inhabitants from industrial activities. Sewage network covers all urbanized areas; isolated and rural buildings not yet connected. Treatment plant monthly E. coli controls during 2010 ranged from below detection limit to 3000 U.F.C./100 ml (September 2010).

Risks

In April 2007, fuel oil spill from API Refinery caused temporary closure of bathing area. Fibrocapsa japonica algal blooms occurred in August 2009 and late August 2010, producing reddish-brown coloration and oily water consistency. Overflow discharge points exist along the beach when sewage system capacity is exceeded.
