Montecatini bathing water is a pebble beach of calcareous and siliceous origin with a gentle slope of 3% on both emerged and submerged areas. The beach is protected by artificial emergent breakwaters. The distance between mean low and high water (safe water limit) is 10 metres, with astronomical tides of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area consists of urban and industrial settlements with railway line passage.

Fosso Avena (Senigallia_Ancona water body). Beach length 970 metres, width 25 metres. Area 0.19104 hectares. Distance between mean low and high water 10 metres. Astronomical tides 30–50 centimetres.

Location

Montemarciano, Province of Ancona, Marche Region. The Vallechiara treatment plant serving the area is located via delle Caserme in Falconara M.ma. Water Quality

Classification E (poorest quality). Water body category C. The Vallechiara treatment plant serves approximately 70,000 inhabitants and 3,500 animal equivalents from industrial activities. Monthly ARPAM monitoring of the treatment plant during 2010 showed results compliant with authorisation limits. E. coli measurements at the treatment plant in 2010 varied from below detection limit to 3000 CFU/100 ml (September). Sewage overflows discharge to Fosso Avena or Fosso della Sorce approximately 70 metres upstream of the coastline.

Risks

Sewage overflow events discharging to the beach area. In April 2007, a pipeline rupture at the API Refinery caused heavy fuel oil spillage and beach contamination, requiring temporary closure of the bathing area until end of May 2007. Fibrocapsa japonica (non-toxic algae) blooms occurred in August 2009 and late August 2010, causing reddish-brown discoloration and oily water consistency.
