Bar Bonvini is a bathing beach located in Falconara Marittima in the Province of Ancona, Marche region. The beach features calcareous gravel with an average slope of 3% and is protected by artificial rocky cliffs. The beach is 460 meters long and 45 meters wide, with a distance of 80 meters between mean low water and high water mark. The surrounding area is characterized by urban settlements and a railway line passage.

Water Quality

Classification category E. Water quality monitoring conducted monthly during 2010 at the treatment plant showed E. coli results below detection limits in March, April, May, October, and November 2010; 50 CFU/100ml in June; 5 CFU/100ml in July; 10 CFU/100ml in August; 3000 CFU/100ml in September; and 260 CFU/100ml in December. The treatment plant serving the area is a biological facility with anaerobic digestion capacity of 85,000 population equivalents.

Risks

The bathing area is influenced by the mouth of the Esino River. In 2007, a major oil spill occurred at the API Refinery on April 4 when fuel oil was discharged into the sea due to a pipeline rupture. In 2009, a massive bloom of the non-toxic alga Fibrocapsa japonica occurred throughout August, and a bloom of the non-toxic dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans occurred in June. Sewage overflow discharges from mixed sewer systems are directed to the beach during exceptional rainfall events.
