SIMEM is a bathing beach in Montemarciano, Ancona province, in the Marche region. The beach is 450 metres long and 30 metres wide, with calcareous gravel of medium slope at 7% on both emerged and submerged sections. It is protected by artificial exposed breakwaters. The distance between medium-low and high water (safe water limit) is 20 metres, with astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area comprises urbanized settlements and productive installations with a railway line passing through.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E. Monitored bathing water body (Senigallia_Ancona). Area extension: 0.52887 hectares. Wastewater treatment is provided by two biological active sludge plants: Cassiano and Vallechiara di Falconara M.ma. The Vallechiara treatment plant serves approximately 70,000 inhabitants from urban settlements and 3,500 equivalent inhabitants from industrial activities, with a design capacity of 85,000 equivalent inhabitants. Monthly ARPAM monitoring of the treatment plant in 2010 showed results always compliant with authorized limits. E. coli levels in treated effluent ranged from below detection limit to 3,000 CFU/100 ml, with highest values in September and December 2010.

Risks

On 4 April 2007, a fuel oil spill occurred at the API Refinery due to rupture of pipeline 8 at the refinery pontoon, resulting in temporary precautionary closure of the bathing area for massive pollution over a large stretch of coast. Beach and breakwater cleaning works were completed by end of May 2007. Fibrocapsa japonica (non-toxic red algae) proliferation occurred in August 2009 and during the second half of August 2010, causing reddish-brown coloration and oily consistency of water.
