Pennacchioni is a bathing beach in Montemarciano, Ancona, consisting of calcareous gravel with an average slope of 8%. The beach is 400 m long and 10 m wide, protected by artificial emerged and submerged reefs. The distance from medium-low to high water (safe water limit) is 20 m, with astronomical tides of 30–50 cm. The surrounding area consists of urban and productive settlements with a railway line passing through.

Coastal water body in the Senigallia-Ancona marine area (Litorale tra Misa e Fosso Rubiano). Beach dimensions: 400 m length, 10 m width. Average beach slope 8%. Safe water distance: 20 m. Astronomical tide range: 30–50 cm.

Water Quality

Classification: Category E (poorest quality). The area is served by the Vallechiara wastewater treatment plant (biological BNR with anaerobic digestion), serving approximately 70,000 inhabitants equivalent from urban settlements and 3,500 from industrial activities. Monthly E. coli controls at the treatment plant in 2010 showed results ranging from below detection limit to 3,000 CFU/100 ml (September 2010), all within authorized limits. Overflow discharge points are located along the beach.

Risks

Natural drainage channel and overflow discharge of untreated wastewater discharging directly onto the beach through an 80 cm diameter steel pipe. April 2007 fuel oil spill from API Refinery pipeline rupture caused temporary bathing closure. Fibrocapsa japonica (non-toxic brown algae) proliferation occurred in August 2009 and the second half of August 2010, causing reddish-brown water coloration and oily consistency.
