Falconara Nord Fosso Nuovo is a gravelly beach in Falconara Marittima, Ancona province, in the Marche region. The beach has a limestone-derived pebble composition with a gentle 3% slope both above and below water, protected by artificial rocky outcrops. The beach extends 300 metres in length and 60 metres in width, with a distance of 80 metres between mean low and high water marks. The surrounding area is characterized by urban settlements and a railway line passing through.

Coastal marine bathing water body (Senigallia_Ancona). The beach has a slope of 3%, distance between mean low-high water of 80 metres, and astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. Area extension: 0.32061 square kilometres.

Location

Falconara Marittima, Ancona province, Marche region. The competent authority is the Municipality of Falconara Marittima, Piazza Carducci 4.

Water Quality

Classification: Good (2015–2018). 2015: E. coli 95th percentile 174.2 CFU/100ml, intestinal enterococci 122.8. 2016: E. coli 232.5, enterococci 145.0. 2017: E. coli 315.5, enterococci 122.5. 2018: E. coli 391.9, enterococci 120.3. Wastewater treatment via a BNR biological treatment plant with anaerobic digestion at Vallechiara, serving approximately 70,000 inhabitants from urban settlements and 3,500 population equivalents from industrial activities. Monthly monitoring of the treatment plant in 2010 showed results compliant with authorized limits.

Risks

Fosso Novo: a natural drainage channel with clear water and sewage overflow discharging to sea via a metal pipe. Influence from the Esino River mouth. Seasonal microalgal bloom of the non-toxic species Fibrocapsa japonica in July and August. Presence of non-stinging jellyfish (Cotylorhiza tubercolata) and stinging jellyfish (Charybdea). Discharge of effluent from livestock and biogas operations in the Jesi area affecting the Esino River, resulting in precautionary bathing closures at points near the Esino River mouth.
