Imperatrice is a sandy private beach in front of Sanremo's urban centre, characterised by small coves delimited by artificial structures arranged both parallel and perpendicular to the shore. The beach is backed by the Imperatrice seafront promenade, a cycle path, a state road, railway line, and parking facilities. Private beach establishments provide services, dining, and accommodation options.

Location

Sanremo, Liguria, Italy. Located along the Ligurian coast in the province of Imperia. Parking is available near the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: GOOD (four-year evaluation period 2021–2024). No sewage treatment plants or sewage pipes are present within the bathing water. A discharge pipe located approximately 750 metres to the east (outside the bathing water) discharges about 1.5 kilometres from the beach.

Risks

Urban context may result in short-term pollution events. During heavy rainfall, increased stream flow from a small river at the eastern boundary may transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgae blooms have occurred in the region over the past decade. Reference station at Santo Stefano al Mare recorded one event between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July 2022, with no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit from 2020 to 2024. Ostreopsis ovata can produce temporary and reversible effects from aerosol inhalation, including respiratory issues and fever in sensitive individuals.
