Coastal water body covering an area of 0.861 km². The water is influenced by the Torrente Foce/Rio Massè basin. The bathing zone is characterized by artificial inlets and artificial cliffs.

Location

Sanremo, Imperia Province, Liguria Region, Italy. The bathing area is accessible via the Riviera dei Fiori coastal cycle path, the Vittorio Emanuele II seafront promenade, and the SS1 road. Private beach establishments provide services and dining facilities.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2019–2022: good. No treatment plants or sewage pipes discharge directly within the bathing water. A sewage pipe approximately 180 metres west of the sampling station discharges offshore at approximately 1.3 km from the shore. The Ligurian Sea is not characterized by cyanobacterial blooms due to predominantly oligotrophic conditions. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms have occurred in the region for approximately a decade; the reference station (Santo Stefano al Mare) recorded no exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit from 2018 to 2022, though values of 10,000–30,000 cells/litre were recorded in August 2019 and July 2022.

Risks

During periods of heavy rainfall and upstream water quality issues, increased discharge from torrents may transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata blooms can cause temporary and reversible respiratory tract problems and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
