Curva Cesano is a pebble and sand beach in Senigallia, Ancona province, with calcareous and flint-like origins. The beach has an average slope of 3% and is protected by artificial emerged cliffs. The distance between mean low water and high water (safe water limit) is 10 metres, with astronomical tidal range of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area is urbanised with a railway line passing through.

Senigallia, Ancona province, Marche region. Beach length 700 metres, width 10 metres. Maximum daily bathers in high season: 3,000.

Water Quality

Water quality classification E. Escherichia coli monitoring conducted by ARPAM throughout 2010 showed variable results: levels ranged from below detection limit to 300 CFU/100 ml. Sewage treatment network serves the entire urbanised territory of Senigallia. Treatment facility has capacity of 20,000 cubic metres per day or 100,000 population equivalents, located near the mouth of the Misa River. Urban population equivalent served approximately 39,300; industrial activities approximately 770. Floating population increases significantly in summer months.

Risks

Overflow discharges from mixed sewer system occur during intense rainfall events. Fitoplankton proliferation recorded in 2009: extensive bloom of non-toxic Fibrocapsa japonica algae throughout August, causing reddish-brown discoloration and oily water consistency. Natural drainage channels with overflow systems discharge into the sea.
