A bathing beach in Senigallia, Marche region, with calcareous-siliceous gravel of gentle 3% slope. The beach extends 700 metres in length and 50 metres in width. The surrounding area is urbanised with a railway line and the riparian zone of the Cesano River nearby. Maximum daily bathers during high season average 500 people.

Water quality classification: E. Escherichia coli monitoring 2010: January 10 UFC/100 ml; February below detection limit; March 300 UFC/100 ml; April below detection limit; May 80 UFC/100 ml; June 80 UFC/100 ml; July below detection limit; August 10 UFC/10 ml; September 20 UFC/100 ml; October below detection limit; November 10 UFC/100 ml; December below detection limit. Wastewater treatment via municipal sewage network serving urbanised areas, with treatment at activated sludge plant located in via Po near the mouth of the Misa River. Plant capacity: 20,000 cubic metres per day (100,000 population equivalents). Population served: approximately 39,300 inhabitants from urban settlements plus approximately 770 from industrial activities. Summer population fluctuations: approximately 10,300 person-equivalents (June–September average 2009); approximately 20,500 person-equivalents (August 2009 average).

Risks

Overflow discharges occur during intense rainfall when sewer network water levels exceed threshold. Phytoplankton proliferation: in 2009, massive bloom of non-toxic Fibrocapsa japonica occurred throughout August, causing reddish-brown discolouration and oily water consistency. No algal blooms recorded in 2007, 2008, and 2010.
