Palazzoni Gemelli is a pebble beach in Senigallia, Marche region, with an average slope of 3 percent. The beach is 700 meters long and 10 meters wide, protected by artificial rocky reefs both above and below water. The surrounding area comprises urban settlements with a railway line passing nearby and the riparian zone of the Cesano River mouth. Maximum daily bathers during high season reach 800 people.

Water

Coastal marine water body designated Fano_Senigallia. The beach is 700 meters long and 10 meters wide. Average distance from water at medium-low to high tide (safe water limit) is 10 meters. Astronomical tide ranges from 30 to 50 centimeters. The seabed consists of limestone-derived pebbles.

Location

Senigallia, Ancona Province, Marche region, Italy. The beach is located along the shoreline between the Cesano and Misa rivers. The competent authority is the Municipality of Senigallia, Piazza Roma 8, 60019 Senigallia.

Facilities

Bar, restaurants, toilet facilities, and bathing establishments are available. Animals are not permitted.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (poor). The sewerage network of Senigallia serves the entire urbanized municipal territory. Wastewater is treated at a mechanical-biological treatment plant with capacity of 20,000 cubic meters per day or 100,000 equivalent inhabitants. The plant serves approximately 39,300 equivalent inhabitants from urban settlements and about 770 from productive activities. Escherichia coli monitoring in 2010 showed variable levels: January 10 CFU/100 ml, March 300 CFU/100 ml, May 80 CFU/100 ml, June 80 CFU/100 ml, August 10 CFU/100 ml, September 20 CFU/100 ml, November 10 CFU/100 ml, with other months below detection limits.

Risks

During intense rainfall, overflow discharges occur through multiple outlets separate from the treatment plant. Two natural drainage channels discharge to sea: Fosso Cone (1) without conduit, and a natural drainage channel with overflow (2) discharging via an 80-centimeter diameter pipe. In 2009, a massive proliferation of the non-toxic alga Fibrocapsa japonica occurred throughout August, causing brownish-red discoloration and oily consistency of the water.
